Puck Jugglin’!

Even though the boys came up short tonight with a 4-0 loss, I came away with one of my best “series” shots so far this season!
So what’s cool when I’m in my “Shooting Zone” is that sometimes I even amaze myself! Most times as a shooter you just know when you capture something really great. But tonight was just one of those times when I was pleasantly surprised once I got back to the Studio & fired up Lightroom and started editing tonight’s game shoot!
When shooting hockey, things always happen so fast, and sometimes there are so many bodies flying around all over that I’m not really certain of what I’m getting, but I just have the feeling in my viewfinder that it all just looks right, and this could be good! So when I got to these I was really surprised because I don’t even remember much of this great save sequence at all…seeing the puck being tossed around, and I don’t remember having such a great, clear shot at all the action….the floating puck, the Goalies Mask, all the sticks, and everything in clear view not getting blocked out by legs, sticks, or bodies, or Ref’s & Linesmen skating by right in front of me between my camera and the action. Sometimes you just get lucky…and this series was one of those times!!!! Made the whole crappy 4- zip loss night worthwhile!

Floatin’ One Home!

Check out the floating puck, just to the inside/left of the I in GEICO on the far post, floating just in front of the Jackals Emblem on the chest of Goalscorer Alan McPherson’s Jersey.
BOOM! 3-1 Jackals

At 14:42 of the frame the Jackals struck again and increased their lead to 3-1. Allan McPherson stepped out of the penalty box and accepted a stretch pass from Spiro Goulakos for a breakaway strike.

Number Two vs. Kalamazoo!

Unfazed by the late first period marker, the Jackals controlled the pace of play and the offensive opportunities, firing 15 shots on net in the second period to Kalamazoo's six. Just past the halfway mark of the period, Justin Kea worked the puck ahead to Allan McPherson who streamed in firing a shot that caused a loose puck in front that was banged home by Tyler Currier. The goal was discussed at length by the officiating crew, but the final decision was a good goal.

The Wall…

I’ve shot it many times….this Cold, Black Stone Sentinel of Solemn Honor. For men my age, it always takes our breath away. Because if not for the Grace of God and the lucky timing of the stroke of Nixon’s 1973 Vietnam War ending pen, my name could very easily now, have been etched on the inside of this wall, looking out at a life that could have been. So I wanted to do something different this time. So rather than trying to battle the crowds, the distractions, the sheer overwhelming number of endless names on each panel, as I have done in the past,  I decided to simplify this shoot to it’s most basic form.
Alpha & Omega. The Beginning & The End.
I simply focused on the very first name on the Wall, and the very last name on the Wall. Each name placed there pretty much in the very order in which each soldier died during this God Awful Atrocity of War.

GAMEWINNER!!!

Sometimes during a shoot, YOU JUST KNOW that you just got the BEST SHOT OF THE NIGHT! Tonight was one of those nights as this image is all the proof you need! I sat behind the Main Street goal all night long, and starting the Third Period I opted to use the 28-70mm mid-range lens rather than my usual trusty 70-200mm. Thank God my instinct paid off or else I never would have been able to go wide enough to capture Colin Jacobs #18 celebrating after Cason Hohmann hammered home a rebound at 3:15 of the period for his sixth goal of the season, his second of the night, and what would soon become the evenings eventual Gamewinner as the Jackals pulled out the win by a final score of 5-4. BOOM!
